Opera House! Harbour Bridge!
I'm excited to just "be" in Sydney. I want to see the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge and just enjoying people watching in Sydney.
The kids are eager for this part of the trip. They want to sleep in a campervan already.
Driving from Brisbane to Sydney, we'll see many coastal towns along the Pacific Coast.
We're so looking forward to snorkling and enjoying the wonderful weather that awaits us in the Great Barrier Reef.
Snorkling with Nemo and all those reef fish. Ahhh....
Seen the South Island, now eager for the beauty of the North Island
Rotorua here we come! Geysers, bubbling mud, hot springs..
Continuing our visit in the South Island of New Zealand, we'll cruise the fiorlands and really see some spectacular scenery.
Sea lions and penguins awake us. Cruising and lots of hiking.
We continue on a road trip through New Zealand. First we visit the South Island where we'll spend the majority of our time...
Glaciers, we are going to see glaciers. Also really looking forward to seeing the beauty of Milford South.
The amazing, famous Great Ocean Drive in Australia...here we come!
We are heading without hotel accommodations, our first winging it part of the trip...we'll figure it out as we go.
Melbourne means coffee and wine for us, which of course we adore!
"Good day Mate", Steve can't stop trying to speak with an Australian accent... Help...!
Booked the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Splurging!
I'm curious about the modern and organized Singapore that we've heard so much about...
We are looking forward to time with friends and an amazing boat cruise through Ha Long Bay.
We've eager for a relaxing cruise along Ha Long Bay and good company with our friends in Hanoi.
In Luang Prabang we're looking forward to spending time in a smaller town and nature!
We'll visit scenic waterfalls, witness the Giving Alms Monk's Ceremony and learn about Lao's history.
Chiang Mai! I'm most excited about Chiang Mai, because it includes a visit to elephants!
A visit to Chiang Mai includes a visit to the ethical Elephant Nature Park. Amazing rescue center for elephants. We learned a lot about the treatment of show animals, sad facts. I can tell it really resonated with the kids. Proud. This compassion, education, perspective is what I really wanted to gain with the kids.
We continue our trip. Flying to Bangkok, Thailand stops the beginning of our international travels.
We're so excited about food going to Thailand! I'm looking forward to the street food, street markets, temples and our first experience in Asia. I'm also anxious with a lot of firsts. We get in late and I'm nervous about finding our way to our first destination with so many unknowns.
Yeah, the trip has started. Jet lag is working to our advantage with easy early starts.
Kauai, the start of our trip. A nice, slow introduction to a lot of fun in the sun, plus nature galore. I've been pleasently surprised with the wild life, great snorkling, a monk seal, green turtles and lots of birds.
The time has come and we're off on our great adventures.
And we're off friends. Luggaged backed. Check. Passports. Check. Itinerary, well almost done, but enough to start the trip. Still need to finalize Cairns and RV section from Brisbane to Sydney.
Our Family's International Summer - Interview question #5 and #6
Now we're on a roll. Conner interviews us.
What do you hope to accomplish?
What are you most excited about?
Our Family's International Summer - Interview question #2, #3 and #4
Once we got into the swing of the interview questions that kids got more into it. At least Aiden did...
Interview question #2, #3 and #4 for our international summer vacation as a family.
Why are we going on this trip?
Why did you quit your job?
Do you plan to study languages before going on the trip?
Our Family's International Summer - Interview question #1
After a lot of persuading we talked our kids and a neighbor to interview us for details on our fascinating summer trip.
Interview question #1 for our international summer vacation as a family.
Where are we going this summer of 2017?
Going light, very light on the packing. At least that's my plan
I love packing, I love purging. This will be fun. I'm up for the challenge of packing light, very, very light. Everyone gets one carry on and a backpack, that's it. If it doesn't fit in here, you're not taking it.
We've made the decision to go, now how to plan for it.
Now we have told work, friends and colleagues, we're emotionally prepared and it's time for the fun planning! These trips for us have often come together based on advice from friends, from travelers who have visited these destinations before us. Very exciting. I love to learn from locals (my hairdresser from Bali, gave me amazing advice about Thailand). We had a few must visit destinations with friends and coffee in mind, they rest was fun and what we wanted to do.
We've made the decision to go, now how to prepare for the trip. Lots to think about! Money, who will run the business, will the house be vacant, what about our dog? We needed to plan.
We have made the decision to take a summer off with the kids to gift them perspective, spend time together as a family and to grow from traveling, that means a plan is required. How can we afford it? What about our dog? Who will take care of our house? What about my day job with its summer demands? Then the hardest one, what about our small business?
The quest for more states...
A gift from Mausi (my mother), the best gift possible of international travel experiences...for Conner that included the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador and Machu Picchu the lost city in the Andes Mountains of Peru.
The quest for more states...
Heading to the midwest is home to Steve, who is from Indiana. That was the start of the trip, we then headed to Chicago, The Dells, Milwaukee, then onto Michigan to Ann Arbor, down to Cincinnati, back to Atlanta. We took two weeks off to complete this road trip.
The kids chose this time...
We have the bug! The travel bugs, on this trip with the RV and the "traveling house" the kids get it. They want to travel wide and far and take the ice cream with us. I have to admit we get off to a rocky start, we get the smallest RV position for a family of four...but it's still kinda um, BIG.
Our first travel goal as a family.
The goal was born to visit all 50 US states with our boys. But we had to establish ground rules. We had driven through so many states, but that doesn't count. What's the fun in that? You see a few gas stations and fast food restaurants, that doesn't count! So we established rules.
Our first family of four vacation to National Parks. No visiting family members on this vacation, it's all about us!
After a little time googling travel destinations with kids, the National Parks out west were a must. With a little nudge from a friend, we agreed to meet up at Yellowstone and let our kids play hard by running around enjoying nature.
